surprisingly long honeymoon
2005-03-25 All Day

after a much needed wonderful night's sleep, we wake, shower, lather up with sunscreen and head out in search of food and beach.

we decided to save money on the trip by cooking our own oatmeal for breakfast and having PB&J sandwiches for lunch. so, our first stop was "bimbo", el mercado. groceries are slightly more expensive in mexico, but still manageable.

after breakfast we asked the front desk how to get to beach near the arch. he repeated "go to marina, hire water taxi." but i knew we could get there another way, i just wasnt sure which way that was.

on our walk through town we saw horribly ridiculous t-shirts saying things like "a dozen lap dances $25, 6 beers $6, your wife not finding out Priceless." we were only mildly accosted by vendors, and one cute black dog that appeared to be debating whether or not he wanted to spend the energy required to bark at db.

most vendors were pretty good about reading us as extremely disinterested but a few were bent on flattering the cash out of us. for instance, one fellow refered to us as honeymooners. after the shock wore off, db and i both errupted in laughter.

shit, when did we get married? we havent even been awake long enough for much of a ceremony. omg! what if someone married us in our sleep on the plane?

to get to lovers beach, near the arch, we cut through a resort. this made db nervous. but due to my previous travels in mexico i knew that no one at the resort would say anything to us.

next we had some rock climbing to do to get to the other side. this consisted of db repeatedly assuring me that "this is the hardest part." and a lot of concern about my safety and ability to make it. little did db know that im agile, flexible, brilliantly balanced, and a mountainous kind of gal.

lovers beach was beautiful and there were hardly any people there - mostly locals. except for the damn flies, it was paradise.

the rock formations reminded db of easter island. and we agreed that all of the rocks looked suspiciously like noses... noses on mice?

the way back looked a little less like we knew what we were doing since we apparently took the longer more difficult route and watched as the father from OC went around us the "easy" way in 1/4 of the time.

we stopped back by the hotel to clean up and headed back to the main roads to search for food and continue our exploration. to our surprise the alarm at a closed money exchange was sounding and we witnessed several mexican police with machine guns pass us on the sidewalk.

let me just say there is nothing like being in a foreign country and having machine gun carrying police headed toward you to make you realize how much less crime would happen in your own country with the same kind of outfit.
