the incredible shrinking woman

is it just me or are clothing manufacturers finally listening to the complaints of womankind and adjusting sizes so we feel better about ourselves?

ive got a heafty merchandise credit at the gap and decided that the post-holiday shopping sales were as good a time as any to make use of the little bugger. so, shopping i went.

now, id like to note that since i moved to boston in august 2000, ive worn anywhere from a size 8 to 12... depending.

in the last year, however, ive dropped a couple sizes and just recently i accepted that i am now a size 8.

i also realized that it looks sloppy and rather unflattering when i wear pants that are one or two sizes too big, even with a belt.

so, i figured id use my merch credit get some new pants that actually fit.

as usual, i tried a couple pair of the same size since they are occassionally sewn slightly bigger or smaller and fit a bit differently.

to my surprise, they were WAY too big. so, i went and grabbed a couple pair of 6s. better fit but without a belt id still be doomed... forget it, i dont feel like changing again, i thought to myself.

leaving with a small woolen sweater i barely paid $15 for, i decided to check out shoes in another store. i asked for my usual size and the salesperson brought me the lovely pink sneakers in 8.5.

i tried them on and felt my foot flop around inside. i checked to be sure they were the right size. mhm, 8.5.

i asked to try an 8, thinking maybe they just ran a bit big. i was shocked to find that the 8s were still too big.

looking a bit like someone who had never bought herself a pair of shoes before i asked "um, do these run a bit big?"

salesperson: "some shoes do, but not these."

huh, i think and then ask for size 7.5.

the 7.5s fit perfect. i loved them. but they were the last pair of 7.5s and the inside was bent making it a bit of a tormenting hell for my right foot. so, i left the shoes and came home to search for them online.

btw: i cant find them for the same CHEAP price as they were at the store. arg.

alas, i sit here in my room... shoeless, and needing a new belt and pants b/c mine are all too big now.

how did i not notice this happening?

i mean, i guess i noticed my pants getting bigger. and i noticed my shoes becoming less comfortable. but i thought it was all part of that "stretching out" thing that happens when you actually wear your clothes.

nope. im shrinking. and although it has likely been occurring over the last year, it feels like its occurring at a rather alarming pace.
