highlights from the tegan and sara show:

5:40pm
DB and i arrive in central square. after careful deliberation, i lead us to economy hardware since i almost never venture to the one across the street from my apartment.

6:00pm
i use DBs cell to call JN. her precise coordinates are storrow drive and mass pike. she should arrive shortly, assuming she can get parking.

6:05pm
DB and i enter the middle east and take a table. we tell our server we are waiting for a third person and she promptly leaves, never to return.

6:15pm
JN arrives and finds me and DB quite amused with ourselves. JN introduces herself to DB and takes the seat next to me. its a boys against girls seating arrangement.

6:30pm
a server, our server?, finally takes our order after some long staring sessions on my part.

6:45pm
we eat. DB and JN have falafel sandwiches, i have a curiously pumpkin smelling chicken and vegetable soup.

7:00pm
we have finished our meal but wait patiently. the doors will not open till 8pm.

7:15pm
through the front door i see tegan and band mates. they are given seats which grant JN and i the perfect view of the left side and back of tegan's head.

7:30pm
after i say several ridiculously "fanatical" things about tegan and sara, i ask my co-concert goers, quite seriously "do you think sara will be here?"

before they notice what an idiot i am, i announce my idiocy. "omg! HAHA! of course she'll be here... its tegan and SARA..." my self-amusement continues for several minutes regarding this one question.

7:45pm
i see sara walk by and head toward her band. had you been sitting with DB, JN and me, you would have been pretty damn sure i was 4yrs old and saw santa claus across the room in mid-june.

8:00pm
enter rachel c, the opener, and who i will recognize later on stage as "the chick who knew tegan and sara". she pulls up a chair with the twins and their band.

8:15pm
enter none other than Meg Toohey!!! why is this so exciting? beats me. perhaps b/c ive seen her play numerous times and worship her voice and her look. although im not nearly as enamoured as LOM.

8:30pm
JN orders a beer and i continue making an ass of myself.

8:45pm
we head out into the cold to join the line of show-goers waiting to see the girls. the staff regulating the line keep walking by telling everyone to "squeeze in".

9:00pm
the show starts. its some funny guy from australia who plays well but nothing fancy or original, and whose lyrics are stories - funny stories. although, nothing too special. and inevitably, a tall person steps in front of me.

9:30pm
rachel c. performs. she's got a great voice and i like her lyrics. she brings out meg toohey a couple times - once for guitar and vocals and another time for drums. i love meg. i may want to have her babies. oh, rachel also brings sara out on keyboards. i am quickly edged out of my viewing ability by another tall person.

10:30pm
some lame-ass i-wasnt-cool-in-high-school-so-now-im-a-40yr-old-dj chick announces tegan and sara.

quick... think back to my ridiculous question at 7:30pm.

tegan and the band emerge.... but wait... where the hell is sara? will she be dropping in from the ceiling, or raising up through a trap door in the stage?

tegan, the motor-mouth she is, starts talking. "um, i think sara is still in the bathroom."

they started the show without sara!

tegan tells us to pretend we havent seen her yet and runs backstage. a minute later, together, tegan and sara take their places.

the music is real and hard and soft and vibrant and brilliant and beautiful. better live because you can feel the beat vibrating your body. you can feel it pumping through your veins and squeezing your heart. and i am reminded why i love music - why i love live music.
